Coinbase has been officially registered as a Restricted Dealer by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA).
This milestone, following the official launch in August 2023, reinforces Coinbase’s commitment to Canada as a Go Deep market.
The registration is the culmination of months of hard work, beginning in March 2023 when Coinbase signed an enhanced pre-registration commitment. Throughout this process, Coinbase has worked closely with Canadian regulators to create a policy framework that serves as a global benchmark.
The registration is one of many steps Coinbase has taken in recent months to expand in Canada. These include:
- Announcing the official launch of Coinbase in Canada in August 2023: This was marked by the integrated development of Interac payment rails in partnership with the Peoples Trust, enabling all Canadian Coinbase users to deposit and withdraw funds (CAD) to and from Coinbase wallets via Interac electronic transfers. This helps make crypto more accessible to millions of Canadians.
- Brian Armstrong Visits Canada: The CEO of Coinbase visited Toronto in November 2023 to meet with the local Coinbase team, partners and the wider crypto community. He participated in two fireside chats: with Sid Paquette, head of RBCx, and Tobi Lütke, co-founder and CEO of Shopify and member of the Coinbase board.
- Expanding Coinbase’s Canadian presence: its commitment to promoting a user-centric crypto platform tailored to Canadians exemplifies Coinbase’s strong Canadian technology hub. With nearly 200 local full-time employees, Canada is Coinbase’s largest technology hub outside the US.
- Investing in Canada’s thriving tech and developer ecosystem: Through Coinbase Ventures, the company has nurtured local startups that contribute to innovation, entrepreneurship and technological advancement in areas ranging from risk assessment to asset management.
