The Securities and Exchange Commission of Hong Kong (SFC) today warned the public about instant text messages from fraudsters impersonating senior SFC officials, including its Chairman.
Members of the public recently reported to the SFC that they received text messages on WhatsApp from people claiming to be the SFC Chairman, Mr Tim Lui and the Executive Director of Market Supervision, Mr Rico Leung. According to their reports, these text messages contained comments about specific stocks.
The regulator noted that these direct text messages are fraudulent and will take decisive action against fraudsters who attempt to defraud in the name of SFC staff.
The SFC also urges the public to be wary of scammers and to refrain from sending money if asked by people claiming to be SFC staff. Members of the public should contact the SFC via email (enquiry@sfc.hk) if in doubt.
The regulatory authority referred the case to the Police.
